Before Scatman: Early Sessions offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the mind of John Larkin, the jazz artist the world would later come to know as Scatman John. Issued as a limited 10" vinyl release by Iceberg Records, this collection showcases Larkin as the dedicated jazz musician he was long before achieving global fame as a chart-topping Eurodance phenomenon.
The release features four original compositions written and performed by Larkin, recorded in Newport Beach in 1978 - eighteen years prior to his pop debut. This release exists thanks to Duke McVinnie, who preserved these session tapes in his private archives and brought them to light for a new generation to hear.
Documenting a period when Larkin was touring as a scatting jazz pianist, unaware of the international stardom awaiting him, this vinyl opens a sonic window into the creative soul of one of the 1990s’ most enigmatic artists, featuring performances by Steve Larrance, Duke McVinnie, Miguel Cruz, and Teddy Lopez.
